The limit is not the number that matters
Every character counter tells you the hard cap — the point at which the network refuses the post. Far more consequential is the fold: the point at which the feed collapses your post behind a "see more" link. Almost nobody expands. On LinkedIn that happens after roughly two lines, on Instagram after about 125 characters, and on TikTok sooner still. A post that fits comfortably inside the limit can still be, in practice, two lines long. That is why this tool marks the fold on each bar.
Current limits, network by network
These are the caps this tool counts against. Networks change them without much notice, so treat them as well-informed defaults rather than a specification.
- X — 280 characters for a standard post
- LinkedIn — 3,000 characters, truncated in the feed after about 210
- Instagram — 2,200 characters in a caption, truncated after about 125
- TikTok — 2,200 characters, with only the first line or so visible over the video
- YouTube — 5,000 characters in a description, with about 157 shown before "show more"
Write to the fold, then cut to the limit
The practical order of work is to get the first line right before worrying about the total. Open with the sentence that earns the expansion, then let the rest run as long as the network allows. A post edited the other way round — trimmed to fit, then reordered — usually ends up with its best line buried in the middle where nobody sees it.
Hashtags and mentions count too
A common surprise is a post that fits until the tags go on. Fifteen hashtags is easily 200 characters, which is most of an X post and all of an Instagram caption’s visible portion. This tool counts them separately so you can see what the tag set is costing you, and it is usually an argument for putting fewer, better-chosen tags on.
Nothing is sent anywhere
The counting happens entirely in your browser. Your draft is never uploaded, stored or logged, which matters if you are pasting a client’s unannounced campaign into a box on a stranger’s website.
